Students’Good Win . at Eden Park

LAST MINUTE VICTORY MT. ALBERT GRAMMAR PLAYS SPLENDID CRICKET Features of Mount Albert Grammar’s defeat of Mr. E. C. Beale’s XI. at Eden Park yesterday were the bowling of Fraser and Webb, and the batting of the latter and Hetherington and L. Vivian. These were the outstanding performances on the students’ side, but that they should succeed in lowering the colours of the fairly strong team opposed to them showed that the whole of the school eleven pulled their weight. The students were fortunate in being favoured by the spin of the penny, and Beale’s team was sent in first on a wet but drying wicket. Fraser soon found the spot and three wickets were down for 23 when Snedden and Schnauer got together and stopped the rot. The former gave a bright display, his partner being more stolid. After they had added 85 Snedden retired with

53, and later Schnauer was also unbeaten when called to the pavilion with 51. The remainder went cheaply, the innings closing for 150. Fraser secured four for 29 in a dozen overs, and his fast-medium deliveries succeeded in keeping batsmen quiet until he tired. D. Webb is a coming trundler, for he is full of guile already, and with experience he will be an acquisition to Auckland bowling. He can turn them both ways, as well as flight them. Of the other bowlers tried King and H. Vivian display promise. A CLOSE FINISH When Grammar went in the pitch had dried and improved considerably, although it was by no means an ideal wicket. At the first the batitng was more solid than brilliant, L. Vivian meeting the good ones with the full face and turning several others to leg, a shot which brought him the major portion of his runs. D. Webb, who was very alert in the field, made things pretty lively when-he came in, and was n ° fc , a £f aid to meet the attack, a couple of hefty hits off Snedden being but a to a a tal third, when he was brilliantly caught at deep square leg by his namesake. Hetherington batted solidly, and only when the end was in sight did he open out. He top scored for the afternoon with an unbeaten 6£, which included nine tours. There was much enthusiasm when he made the winning hit to the boundary a minute before time.

Coates, Snedden and Schnauer divided the bowling honours, while Kelly displayed rare ability when he stumped 11. Vivian. The fielding of the combined team was only fair, apart from individual efforts, the atempts at catching in the slips being poor; On the other hand, the work of the students in the field was admirable, a notable feature being the excellent manner in which the ball was returned to the ’keeper.
