ASTOUNDING MIGRATION
MILLION SHANTUNGITES TO MANCHURIA By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. Noon. LONDON, Wed. Cables from a Japanese semi-official news agency at Shanghai persistently report a defeat of Chang Tso-Lin’s troops and that Feng-Yu-Hsen occupies a strategic point on the border of Shantung and Shanghai. Captain Lalor is reported to have been released without payment of ransom. War and famine has driven a million Shantung residents to Manchuria, constituting the most astounding migration in history. It is believed, according to the Chinese Economic Bureau’s annual report, that the majority intend to remain permanently farming. They are attracted by the protection and security of the territory governed by Chang Tso-Lin.—A. and N.Z.
