Australian Wizard of Ring Dies Destitute in New York
TRAGEDY CLOSES GRIFFOS LIFE
Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Wed. Griffo (Alfred Griffiths), the exAustralian prize-fighter, has died destitute. He was found dead in a roominghouse in a disreputable quarter of the j city. Death is attributed to indigestion and a generally run-down condition. — j A. and N.Z.
. Griffo was classed by both Australian . j and American writers as the greatest : boxer the world has ever known. He ' ! first commenced boxing in Sydney, and ; later went to America, where he had been ■ j for about 30 years. He was a boxer. i not a fighter. His opponents were hard put to it to lay a glove on him. Mr. I Frank Burns, the well-known Auckland j referee, was very unlucky not to receive | a decision over Griffo in Melbourne. Billy j Murphy also fought Griffo in Australia.
