“The Messiah”
HANDEL’S IMMORTAL WORK TO HERALD XMAS SEASON
CHORAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT
Without a performance of “The Messiah” the Christmas season would seem incomplete. Musically it has developed into a custom, and one, which, judging’ from the support generally extended by the public, is much appreciated. Interest in the Auckland Choral Society’s performance of Handel’s im-
mortal oratorio on Thursday, December 15, will be principally centred in the appearance of Mr. Ernest McKinlay, the well-known New Zealand tenor, who recently returned to the Dominion after several years abroad. During his travels Mr. McKinlay has succeeded in greatly enriching his experience and during the last few years has recorded extensively for the principal record manufacturers, also attaining considerable success on the English concert platform. During the next few weeks Mr. McKinlay will be singing the tenor role in this oratorio for several New Zealand societies, his latest engagement being by the Napier Choral Society. The other soloists are Miss Naomi Whalley, of Palmerston North, who was stated by Mr. Arthur Jordan, the English tenor, to possess one of the most promising voices he had heard in the Dominion; Madame Irene Ainsley, contralto; and Mr. Dayton Venables, ‘bass.
