OF INTEREST TO SCOUTS
The monthly meeting of the Scooters’ Association was held at district headquarters on Wednesday, November 30. There was a fairly good attendance and general scouting business was dealt with, the discussion being mainly on camps and camping. * * * The annual meeting of the Grey Lynn Troop took place last Saturday, when the report disclosed a successful year. The meeting was combined with a social evening, when music, recitations, games and an exhibition of step-dancing by two of the Scouts added to the enjoyment of those present. A charade acted by the Scouts and a daintily served supper brought the function to a close. * * * The Scoutmaster of the progressive Avondale Troop supplies the following news: The Avondale Troop hope to hold their annual camp from December 26 to January 9. The sije has not yet been finally decided upon, but it is hoped to be able to secure a site at Ostend. Over 45 lads are looking forward to going away, and it is owing to the activities of the committee that a considerable sum is in hand to cover a large part of the camp expenses. An alteration of the usual parade hours commenced in December, when instead of using the hall, the boys have their parade outside owing to the longer daylight. The Troop are grateful to the proprietors of the Avondale Pictures for holding a benefit entertainment, a fortnight ago. Patrol-leader E. Horan has been treasurer for a considerable time, and his work has been done in an exceedingly accurate manner. Second F. Armstrong and Scouts I. Bellini and W. Jeffs has completed his first class test and been awarded his badge. The troop are unfortunate in having one boy seriously ill in the hospital. but hope that his cheerful disposition will help to give him confidence toward a speedy recovery for, being a very popular Scout, he is missed by his many friends in Avondale. The Scoutmaster of St. Barnabas’ Troop reports as follows: The troop is still showing steady progress and some evening fun, in the form of an attack on Mount Eden, was enjoyed by the boys, last Friday. The final church parade of the year was held last Sunday week, and there was a very good muster. Scout Hutchison has passed his Second-class Test. Several boys of the troop assisted at the Girl Guide Rally, and also helped with the distribution of flowers at the Hospital, recently. • * * The Tahutimai Scouts journeyed to Swanson last Saturday and inspected the camping site. This troop will enter camp on Boxing Day and remain for ten days under canvas. Little Beaver extends an invitation to any available Wigwam Chief to go camping with him during the holidays. He writes; “Perhaps there is
a Scout who would like an extra fortnight after his troop camp, or some other boy of about my own age (16) that you know of. I have a tent and most of the necessary gear, so the boy who decides to come would need to bring only his share of the food, and I take a pride in keeping this expense at a minimum by shooting and fishing. I have permission to camp in an ideal bay. not far from Arkle’s Bay—only an hour’s launch journey from Auckland. ‘•lf several boys cared to join forces and bring their own tent, I could get permission for them to pitch it in the same property ” Communications for Little Beaver should be addressed to the Wigwam, ccjad will be sent on.
