Ormsby-Gore, Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, in answer to a question in the House of Representatives, said that discussions with King Feisal of Iraq, in reference to that State seeking membership of the League of Nations, had resulted in agreement, which it is expected will he signed shortly. Iraq, which is constituted an independent kingdom, is a mandated territory of Great Britain, who accepted the responsibility for the reorganisation and defence of the territory after its surrender by the Turks. Treaties have been made between Iraq and Britain providing that the latter should endeavour to obtain the admission of Iraq to the League of Nations, and as soon as that admission had been accomplished all the responsibilities of Great Britain as the Mandatory Power should cease. Iraq's independence, in any case, is to be completed in 25 years.
