SIR JOHN SIMON PRAISED

The Secretary of State for Earl of Birkenhead, speaking at a dinner to Sir John Simon, in the latter’s constituency, Spen Valley, Yorks, referred to Sir John’s sacrifice in practically giving up two years of his professional life at the Bar to act as Chairman of the Commission on India. Although there had been many criticisms of the commission, said Lord Birkenhead, he had not discovered a single criticism, either in Britain of India, of the members of the commission.—A. and N.Z.
Sir John Simon has a very large practice at the Bar. He was called to the Bar in '1899, and took silk in 190 S, and is a Bencher of the Inner Temple. In 1903 he was one of the counsel for Britain in the Alaska Boundary Dispute with the United States. He was Solicitor-General under Mr. Asquith (now Earl of Oxford), 1910-13, Attorney-General in the Cabinet, 1913-15, Secretary <-'f State for Home Afar fairs, 1915-16, and was a major in the Air Force, 1917-I*. -
