Speeding Through
On our asphalted roads one gets that tarred feeling:. Fifteen miles an hour may be a chill; but 50 is a fever. Over 200 cars took place in a recent motor club run. Quite a toot ensemble. We’re getting more good roads, but a movement for fewer road hogs should be started. Life is like that—in the towns without a parking limit there’s generally no good reason for parking. When a bee comes buzzing around, it’s better to stop the car yourself than let some fence or ditch do it for you. The man with a brand new car is generally a careful driver. He doesn’t care to dent the fenders the first thousand miles. When retiming a motor, retard the spark. When No. 1 piston is on top dead centre on the compression stroke, the breaker points should just begin to open. + * * Little Horace, in a prank. Dropped a match in our gas tank, “When he comes down,’ mother said. “He’ll go supperless to bed.” A bath of kerosene will never hurt the working parts of an overhead valve mechanism and should the valves be gummed it is quite likely to free them. The sweet girl graduate used to read books on how to acquire a good carriage. Now she devotes her attention to annexing a chap with a roadster. * * * There is at present on the market a New Zealand-made automatic air attachment, which is guaranteed by the makers to save petrol and brakes. Hoad construction in America during 1926 broke all previous records, involving an expenditure of over £1,500,000,000. One item was the construction of 7,500 miles of concrete road.
Weak valve springs can cause endless trouble in promoting poor engine operation. Whenever the valves are removed, these springs should be measured to see that they are the same size. If one spring is short, it will either have to be stretched or a plate placed under it to increase the pressure. Should you lose, or crack, a hub-cap on a front wheel, do not run your car, as this will allow the grit and dust to get into your wheel bearing, resulting in an unnecessary repair bill. Transfer the hub-cap from a rear wheel to the front wheel, and run this wav until you can purchase a new hub-cap. * * * Never use metal polish on the headlight reflectors —it will scratch them. Use dry powdered jewellers’ rouge. Apply it with a chamois and polish in a circular motion. If the reflector is tarnished in any way, moisten the rouge with a little alcohol or methylated spirit. Always use a clean chamois.
