W. BROOKE-SMITH PLAYED FOR EDEN 20 YEARS AGO AND IS STILL A MATCH-WINNER
W. Brooke-Smith joined the Eden Cricket Club in 1905. He was batting for his old club before some of the colts in the present Eden Ist XI, were born. These days, “Brookie’s” speciality is in winning hits. He made the shot that won the match against Varsity a fortnight ago, and gave a spectacular touch to the EdenY.M.C.A. match on Saturday by clouting one of Bowley’s slow ones clean out of the ground for the winning hit. But for the “old horse,” Eden might have been very hard put to get the win it did on Saturday. Eden had 27 to get for a win and three wickets in hand when Brooke-Smith went in, but to such effect did the veteran lay the wood on, and so well did Lindsay Weir back him up, that they got the runs and twenty odd to spare before BrookeSmith was bowled in attempting to hit his third sixer.
