NEW COMET SEEN

VISIBLE TO NAKED EYE ft'IDE-SPREAD head and tail WELLINGTON, To-day. A new comet was observed at j-jnganui at 8.35 p.m. yesterday by Mr Hilton- Mr. Gawith, of Hawera, nicked it UP a few minutes later. f lt has a large nucleus, with a widely-spread head and a large tail. I, j S situated in constellation Norma, which is further south than Scorpio. Its position was then given as 16hrs Satin right ascension, and 53deg south declination, but this morning Mr. Townsend at Hawera reported the c omet as being one of the second magnitude, easily visible to the naked re its position then being 16hrs 20 tain right ascension, and 52deg south declination. Apparently the comet is travelling rery rapidly, and it is hoped to pick up on the telescope at the Dominion Observatory this afternoon. A cable from Melbourne to Dr. yiams announced the discovery of a oß et there on Saturday, but a multilation o'! the cable message prevented any accurate determination of the position. ______ OBSERVED AT LYTTELTON Press Association.. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The Rev. B. Dudley, of Lyttelton, sports having observed a beautiful imet shortly after nine o’clock last night in strong moonlight. It was draatec between the two constellations Norma and Ara, and at the hour samed lie* in a southerly direction. UKE COLLECTION OF STARS A few people in Auckland saw the new object in the sky shortly after nightfall last evening, but it was only those who had more than a casual interest in the features of the heavens that even noticed there was something unusual. It had the appearance of a collection of stars, surrounded by a haze, iron which a distinct tail extended.
