ROWING
WEST END CLUB SATURDAY’S RACES It is unfortunate that one of the pair oar boats in possession of the West End Rowing Club is tre worse for wear, because it has the effect of making the trial races purely a one-sided affair. A series of races were held on the club’s short course on Saturday afternoon, but each crew who chose the boat in question was beaten by lengths, and the races were therefore no indication of what the-losing crews were capable; in fact, they were not races. The first heat saw Bloxham concede Strange 3s, but he made up the handicap a few strokes from the start. At the red shed he was a length in front, and went on to win easily by three lengths. Taylor on 10s, and with the good boat, was also an easy winner from Hadley, ss. The third heat saw Dowling, scratch, romp home three lengths in front of Haylock. O. Felton and L. McDonald drew a bye, and also drew the old boat, with the result that in the semi-final they had no chance against Bloxham, who won slowing up by three lengths. Skinner won the second heat of the semi-final from Taylor with ease. The final was taken by Bloxham. As the runners up came past the post their boat capsized, but no one* was hurt, and they were none the worse for their dip. The races were held for caps presented by Mr. J. A. Cooper, a vice-president. Mr. M. Spencer was starter on Saturday and Mr. D. McFarlane judge. Results: — First heat.—W. G. Bloxham (str), C. Parvin, F. Orrell (cox), 5 sec, 1; L. Strange( str), R. NORTH SHORE CLUB Four evenly-matched crews took part in the trial fours competition for a challenge cup rowed by members of the North Shore Club on Saturday. The usual course from North Head to the clubhouse had to be abandoned owing to a choppy sea and a strong wind blowing across the course. Smooth water off Cheltenham Beach proved an excellent substitute. The first heat was won by Dean (str), W. Seagar. Challinor and Everson, who beat Norris (str), Wrigley, Oliver and Moore by half a length. The winning boat held the lead all the way. In the second heat, Gardiner (str), Townsend, Harvey and Neville beat Davies (str), McCallum, Hutton ar.d Jack. Gardiner was challenged near the finish but won by two lengths. In the final Gardiner beat Dean by over a length, after a well-cont' sted race. His crew wins the challenge cup and a photograph donated by Schmidt’s Studios. The races were mainly a trial of skill between the various coxwains.
