Cholera Epidemic Sweeps Bengal
HUNDREDS OF DEATHS RAPID SPREAD OF DISEASE By Cable. —Press Association. Copyright. Reed. 1.45 p.m. CALCUTTA, Friday. Due to the unsatisfactory monsoon and famine conditions, a grave cholera epidemic in Bengal is reported. The cases for the province total 6,000 weekly and the cases not reported are probably treble that number. The disease has been traced in many instances to Hindus bathing in the Ganges. The Government is issuing enormous quantities of free vaccine, and sending medical men to the affected area. This year is stated to be one of the cycle in which the cholera wave occurs. Last week in Calcutta the deaths totalled 106, in several cases Europeans.—A. and N.Z.
