BALDWIN GOVERNMENT ANGRILY ASSAILED

LORD CARSON MAKES HEATED UTTERANCE IN HOUSE OF LORDS

By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Thursday.

Lord Carson, in supporting in the House of Lords Lord Harris’s motion demanding that the Landlord and Tenant Bill be referred to a Select Committee, angrily attacked the Government.

The speaker declared that the greatest calamity to a country was a Government that had an overwhelming majority. He added: —“They listen to nobody and they think that all they have to do is to come to this House and say, ‘We are the Conservative Government, and are the upholders of the House of Lords. You must pass this Bill without examination.’ If this House is unable to throw out, amend, or examine Bills, what are we here for?”

The Earl of Birkenhead, the Marquess of Reading, Viscounts Burnham, Cave and others, said that owing to the pressure of time, the passing of the motion would kill the Bill, and that it would be interpreted in the country as a back-stair way of throwing out the measure, in the interests of the landlords.

Lord Harris's motion wa3 defeated. —A. and N.Z.
