THE WILD HORSE

Tho Tiger was a fierce, wild horse, sent to the Fairy King by the Gnome King. When the horse came no one could manage him. It was a pity, for he was a fine horse, and could run like the wind. But he was savage and cross, and so of no use to anyone. One day a funny little Elf came to the King and said he could tame the horse. And the King said, if he did, he should be head horseman to the King, and have a line house and lots of money. So the Elf went into the fields, all alone, and when the horse rushed at him he threw a rope with a loop at the end right over his nose. And the more the Tiger pulled the less he could breathe. And at last he had to stand still and give in. Then the Elf talked to him a lot; he told him how kind the King was and how fine .he would look with a red bridle, a golden bell, and a scarlet tassel on his chest. And at last the wild horse promised to obey, if the Elf was telling the truth, which, of course, he was. So the horse kept his promise and became the King’s own charger. There was a notice in the shopwindow offering a reward for the finding of a lost half-Persian cat. Bettv was puzzled. “Why don’t they tell us,” she asked, “which half of the poor thing we are to look for?” Old Lady: “What have you lost? A penny? mind, a penny does not go far.” Crying Child: “Mine did. It rolled down the road and into the drain.” —Sent in hv iir.h _
