RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“FAUST” It is not surprising that the U.F.A. Company have been the first to recognise the wonderful possibilities of “Faust” as a story for screen reproduction. Preparations for this production were commenced more “han a year ago. Innumerable obstacles, which at first glance appeared unsurmountable, had to be overcome, but, finally, the enthusiasm and the inflexible energy of all concerned resulted in a magnificent contribution to the world’s masterpieces of screen art. F. W. Murnau, famous for his wonderful direction in “The Last Laugh,” has been responsible for the production of this great masterpiece. The part of Mephisto has been created by Emil Jannings, who is recognised today as the world’s leading 3creen character player. Marguerite is in the capable hands of Camilla Horn—a beautiful newcomer to the screen: and Goesta Ekman plays the title ole of “Faust,” and that incomparable artist Yvette Guilbert—the world-famous chanteuse, appears as Martha. “Faust,” after a very successful season at the New Regent Theatre, will be shown at the Rialto and Regent Theatres to-night.
George Jessell’s leap into screen popularity has not only been rapid, but solid. What is more, it promises to be enduring, which speaks volumes for the y T oung actor’s ability, as well as his personality. Jessel’s success with “Private Izzy Murphy” was most pronounced. His next picture is said to be called “The Broadway Kid,” and its chief character is said to fit him like the proverbial glove.
