Feilding Meeting Ends Successfully

SUBSTANTIAL TOTALISATOR INCREASE ( Special to THE SL'X) FEILDING. To-day. ONE of the most successful spring meetings conducted by tlie Feilding Jockey Club was concluded yesterday. The weather was quite wintry, with some heavy showers failing during the earlier portion of the programme, but the track stood up to the conditions very well. The substantial increase in totalisator investments on the first day was maintained, yesterday’s figures being £20,408, making the total for the meeting £46,258, against £38,400. an inerase of £7,658.

POURI MAKES AMENDS A good field of 11 came out for the first race, the Cheltenham Hurdles. Pouri £ 335, being favourite in a good betting race, while Star Area £289, Brigadier Bill. Troilus £216 and Elysianor £212 had some friends. Elysianor led through the straight the first time from Bright Day. Star Area, Braeman, Brigadier Bill, Mister Gamp and Troilus, with Pouri last. Along the back the favourite was taken along, the order passing the five furlongs being Elysianor, Pancliito. Mister Gamp, Braeman, Brigadier Bill, Star Area, Pouri and Revel. Into the straight Pouri was on the outside of Elysianor and Mister Gamp, witli Brigadier Bill and Braeman next, and Star Area and Bright t Day well back. Pouri easily did best from the last fence to win comfortably by half a length. Brigadier Bill cut Elysianor out of second money by a head, and Mister Gamp was another head away fourth. Revel was well back fifth, and then came at intervals Braeman, Star Area and Troilus, COURAGEOUS IMPROVES "Warfille was made a big favourite in the Novice Stakes, being entrusted with £473, as against Le Champ £340, Plane £253, Whisogne £2ll and the Courageous-Spearmiss bracket £2OB, anything outside the first two being at good odds. At the start Whisogne and Courageous lost ground. At the end of a furlong Fee Simple was in charge from Historic, Warfille, Royal Picture, Card Trick, Aurora Borealis and Plane. As they started to come across the top Fee Simple led Warfille, Royal Picture, Card Trick, Plane, Courageous, Aurora Borealis and Delsarto, but Royal Picture was the first to turn for home, being clear of Fee Simple and Warfille, following them being Card Trick, Plane and Courageous. At the half distance Plane was in charge, but Courageous put in another fine effort and got up to win by half a head. Card Trick was a length andalialf further back, and Whisogne a close fourth. Next were Royal Picture, Fee Simple, Warfille, Kawhakina, Service and Iciogne. BIG EVENT TO KILMISS All started in the principal event, the St. Andrew’s Handicap, and in an even betting race Wanderlust £425, Paitonu £365. Joy Bird £351 and Bonogne £320 were the prime fancies. Paitonu was making play going out of the straight, being followed by Wanderlust, Waicullus, Joy Bird. Bonogne, Euphonium, Lady Anstruther, Kilmiss, Vivo and Novar. At the five furlongs Paitonu was a couple of lengths ahead of Joy Bird and Wanderlust, with Bonogne, Lady Anstruther, Waicullus, Euphonium, Kilmiss and Vivo following. The top-weight improved his position crossing the top. and the order into the straight was Paitonu, Euphonium, Joy Bird, Bonogne, Kilmiss and Novar. Paitonu was the first beaten, and a good finish saw Kilmiss win by half a length from Euphonium, with Wanderlust a head away third. Paitonu was fourth and next were Queen’s Choice, Waicullus, Novar, Joy Bird, Vivo, Bonogne and Lady Anstruther. EPISODE WINS EASILY Royal Duke was backed right down in the Oroua Nursery, but the good thing was beaten all the way. Royal Duke carried £704, the Episode-Cur-tain bracket £478 and Te Atiawa £3OO. At the start Curtain and High Faluting were slow away. Episode went out fast from Te Atiawa, Miss

High Faluting next. Episode -went on to win attractively and easily by a length and a-half from Te Atiawa, who was only a head in front of Select. Royal Duke, who went badly, was fourth, and then came Charmaline, Miss Guwrie, Briar Root and Curtain. THE RAIDER’S GOOD PRICE Vast Acre £ 636 and Expense £572 were in big demand in the Jsikau Hack Handicap, while fair support was forthcoming for Fee Simple £222 and The Raider-Lady Cynthia bracket. After the field had gone nearly a furlong Vast Acre was the pilot from Powhiri. The Raider. Royal Time. Lucky Lays, Expense, Miss Mercia and Mine Hohoro. At the half-mile The Raider took charge and led into the straight from Vast Acre, Powhiri, Royal Time, Expense, Miss Mercia, Lucky Lays and Borsalene. No thing could get near The Raider over the last bit, and he won comfortably by a length and a-half from Lucky Lays, who was a length and a-half in front of Vast Acre. Powhiri was fourth, and the next to cross the line were Hinekatorangi, Expense, Royal Elm, Borsalene and Miss Mercia. The win-

ner was allowed to pay a false price, for he was unlucky on Wednesday. SILVERMINE COMFORTABLY Punters went in big for Silvermine in the Colyton Handicap, and he was entrusted with £Bl3, while. Arrow Lad £5lB and Licinius £346 jvere at the head of the other quotations. At the start Huikai got caught in the tapes and \\ henuanui was slow off the mark. The favourite was the smartest out, being attended by Licinius. Mireusonta. Arrow Lad, Deluge and Royal Land. At the four furlongs Silvermine was making play from Licinius, and Arrow Lad. and following the trio were Whenuanui, Mireusonta, Huikai and Deluge. Arrow Lad went up crossing the top and was with Silvermine into the straight, with Licinius just behind them, and Mireusonta, Whenuanui and Deluge heading the remainder. From this out the favourite had the result well in hand, and he scored nicely by half a length from Arrow Lad, while Deluge was a couple of lengths away in third berth. LIMOSA WINS WELL Oratrix £ 676 and Henna £615 monopolised the market in the Rongotea Hack, Boy £351 and Limosa £249 being at the head of the others. Going out of the straight Sovena, Tanagra, Irish Lad and Hymgreat were in a line, being followed by Henna, Lieut. Bill. Volplane Arclion, and Limosa. Along the back Limosa improved her position and just before the home turn Volplane went through, being first into the final stretch, next in order being Sovena, Limosa, Henna, Arclion, Thurnbell. Hymgreat and Oratrix. Limosa did best from this out and won by a length from Thurnbell, while Henna was half a length further off. Volplane was fourth, and then came Arclion. Oratrix, Calitlie, Sovena and Hymgreat. RU AN U I AGAIN The success of Wanganui horses was maintained in the final event, the Empire Handicap, in which there were 11 runners. Duke Abbey £902 and the first day’s winner, Ruanui, £635 were best backed, next in order being Epistle £515. Anything outside these was at a long price. At the start Duke Abbey was troublesome, and when they did get away he dwelt. Ruanui and Polyphemus were the first to become conspicuous, and along the back Epistle, Duke Abbey, Orazone and Bright Knight were their nearest attendants. Polyphemus, Ruanui, Epistle.
