Towle, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Tweed, who has been staying with her for some weeks, has left on a visit to Wellington. • * • Mr. and Mrs. A. Wooton, of the Malay States, are visiting Auckland and are staying at Rose Cottage, Hotel Mon Desir, Takapuna. * * * Mr. and Mrs. H. J. McGeorge, who have been spending a few weeks with Mrs. A. W. Sims, left last evening for Dunedin. * * * Mrs. M. Turtel and family, of St. Helens, Lancashire, England, have taken up their residence at Hillcrest, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Armitage, Domain Street, Auckland. * S= * Dr. and Mrs. Campbell Duncan, of Rotorua, are spending a few days with their daughter, Mrs. Kenneth MacCormick, Dominion Road. They will return to Rotorua on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Clutha returned from Wellington by the Limited this morning. * • *■ A very successful garden party was held in the grounds of Mr. G. R. Hutchinson’s residence. Marama Terrace, Birkenhead, on Saturday last, to raise funds for the A .vat ah a Company of Girl Guides. The Mayoress of Birkenhead, Mrs. E. G. Skeates, who was received by Mrs. Usher, District Commissioner of Girl Guides, opened the function.

W.C.T.U. ANNUAL MEETING PROTEST AGAINST TIN HARES Mrs. J. Cook presided over the annual meeting of the Auckland Women’s Christian Temperance Union held on Tuesday in the clubroom of the Y.W.C.A. A large number of members were present, who listened with interest to a very helpful address given by Miss Paul, the evangelistic superintendent. The meeting voiced a very strong protest against the introduction into Auckland of tin-hare racing, and the accompanying gambling, which is a grave menace to the welfare of the community. Telegrams had been sent to the Prime Minister and the member of Parliament for Auckland Central in regard to the Licensing Bill.. ANNUAL REPORT A year of steady progress and a great deal of work was shown by the secretary’s report. The members had taken part in the various street collections and also in the drive for the unemployed. A large number of signatures had been secured for the women’s petition for the two-issue ballot paper. Good work had been done in the Maori department, 250 garments being sent to the Maori children and in the memorial library committee. Mrs. Hall reported 1,600 magazines and 630 books had been sent to the back blocks. A donation of £2 2s was passed to buy toys to be sent in the Christmas parcels for the children in the back blocks. VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS Reports were read by the superintendents of the following departments: Evangelistic, Maori, library, social hygiene, legal and Parliamentary, Bible in schools, peace and arbitration and white ribbon. The treasurer’s statement showed the finances to be satisfactory. Mrs. Cook gave a short account of the beginning and progress of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, saying it was the first women’s organisation to be international in scope. She paid a high tribute to the Howard Penal Reform League, and spoke of the benefits of probation. She gave a short report of the peace and arbitration department. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Delegates were appointed to the Dominion convention to be held in Napier. The election of ofiicers resulted in the re-election of the former officers: President, Mrs. John Cook; recording secretary, Mrs. Taylor; corresponding secretary, Miss N. Dewar; treasurer, Mrs. P. Dowling; vice-presidents. Mesdumes Fulljames, Hutchinson, Ready and Pierce. The union goes into recess till March.
