IN MERRY MOOD
FEODOR CHALIAPIN, the -*• famous Russian bass, was in a merry mood on his return to London recently. “You know I am very superstitious,” he stated to an interviewer.
“Thirteen—that is no good number for me. Eleven—yes. At Monte Carlo every season I lose all my money backing my lucky number.” “Isn’t it bad for singers to smoke,” asked the interviewer, the question being prompted by the fact that the bass was obviously enjoying a big cigar, “Yes,” he replied. “Particularly for bad singers.” And Chaliapin, smiling slyly, took a long pull at his cigar.
