NEW REGENT

“ROLLED STOCKINGS” “Rolled Stockings,” a Paramount picture, will be shown for two more days at the New Regent Theatre. It is a story of college life, culminating with a boat race chat has never been equalled on the screen. College crews actually raced for the scenes at Berkeley, California. In the story, two brothers, Richard Arlen and James Hall, fall in love with the same girl, Louise Brooks. Arlen, a freshman, subject to the hazing of his older brother and fellow classmen, is put through some severe handicaps. In one of the sequences they get into a fist tight over a jazzy young vamp, Nancy Phillips, but everything is finally untangled. “Rolled Stockings” is a real “youth” story. The Paramount Junior Stars—Hall, Arlen, Miss Brooks, Miss Phillips and El Brendel —are featured. In addition to this sparkling comedy of youth a strong programme of vaudeville and music is provided. The seventh of that popular series of famous music masters, which during the past few months have been such a feature at the Regent Theatre, is presented with full and powerful orchestral accompaniment by Maurice Guttridge’s Regent Orchestra. The subject this week, “The Life and Work of Chopin,” lends itself to beautiful treatment by virgin and piano, the orchestral accompaniment receiving big applause every evening. Fred Curran, the famous comedian, is more popular than ever, his numbers this week appealing to the Auckland public with their clever humour. The old song originated by Fred Curran, which is already well known to New Zealanders, “A Straight *Bananu,” and a particularly fine parody on “I’m Wasting My Time on You,” brings the “house down” at every performance. The climax is reached in an absolute riot in his final number, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor.” The “Rolled Stockings” competition last evening resulted as follows: First prize, six correct, Miss Conway, Prince Arthur Hotel, Auckland: second prize, five correct, W. R. Kingston-Smith, 7 Marewa Road. Auckland: third prize, four correct. Miss Ivy Hodge, Symonds Street, Auckland.
