CANON F. W. YOUNG RETIRES
PARISHIONERS BID FAREWELL TRIBUTES TO HIS SERVICE After a long career of service as a priest of the Church of England, Canon F. W. Young, vicar of All Saints', Ponsonby, for nine years, was bidden, farewell by a large gathering of parishioners last evening. Opportunity was also taken to record appreciation of the services of the Rev. E. Chitty, curate to Canon Young, who has also resigned. Canon J. Haselden, who represented the Archbishop, Dr. Averill, spoke of the esteem of the clergy for Canon Young. It was only fitting, he said that after many strenuous years in the ministry. Canon Young should be given less
onerous duties. Nevertheless he intended to continue in lighter work in his retirement. “He has not only faithfully discharged his duties in connection with his parish, hut has taken an active part in diocesan affairs,” said Canon Haselden. "Canon Young has been a member of many important committees and made Sunday school work by mail to backblocks children his special interest.” Canon Haselden also spoke in warm appreciation of Mr. Chitty’s valued assistance, which was an example to the whole parish. Mr. M. J, Bennett and the Rev. Frazer- Barton briefly referred to the high regard felt by all for the retiring vicar. The chairman, Mr. E. Smith, presented Canon. Young with a cheque on behalf of the parishioners and Sunday school pupils, and expressed the regret felt by all at his retirement; A similar gift was made to Mr. Chitty. Presentations were also made to Mrs. Young and Mrs. Chitty. The. co-operation between vicar and curate, it was stated, had been a splendid example and resulted in wonderful work being done in the parish during the past few years. Canon Young felt keenly his severance of the ties of friendship. “But many links remain to remind me of pleasant associations with All Saints’ Church,” he said, and. expressed apj preciation of the loyalty shown by [members . of the church and their [hearty co-operation in the various de- [ partments and activities, i Canon Young will relinquish his | charge at the end of next January, [and then take over the Milford parish jHe will be succeeded at All Saints’ by I the Rev.
