STRAND
TWO FINE FILMS An attractive double feature programme is being shown at the Strand Theatre. “After Midnight,” with Norma Shearer and Lawrence Gray, is first on the 'programme. “After Midnight” tells of two sisters, one a cigarette seller in a night cabaret, the other a chorus girl. One is thrifty and steady. The other is extravagant and flighty. But in their hour of greatest need—when the steady, dependable girl does not care whether she lives or dies—it is the jazz-mad Maizie who protects her. regardless of her own safety. Monta Bell directed this picture, which tells of youth, tragedy and romance in the strange little, world that comes into being between the hours of dusk and dawn. It is founded on fact, and carries intense dramatic interest that never flags for a moment. Fox Films “Coll'een,” a comedy drama of racing horses, thrills and romance, starring Madge Bellamy in the role of an Irish lassie, is nearing the end of its run at the Strand, where it has been showing to crowded houses. This delightful picture shows Miss Bellamy in a role altogether different from the flapper type she portrayed in “Sandy” and “Summer Bachelors,” but again she scores a triumph by her characterisation. A cast of screen favourites support her, including Charles Morton, J. Farrell Macdonald, Sammy Cohen, Ted McNamara and Marjorie Beebe. An Aesop Fable, “Captain Kidd,” and a Strand Magazine with the latest topical budgets and world events are included in the programme. A bright musical programme is provided by Eve Bentley and her Strand Symphony Orchestra, who specially feature “Pot Pourri” of musical gems from Gilbert and Sullivan operas.
