BLUE FLASH IN SKY
STRANGE PHENOMENON
Details of a strange aerial phenomenon which he witnessed while riding in broad daylight at evening over the Sussex Downs, near Arundel, England, have been related by Mr. Joseph Thorp, of The Decoy, Poling, Sussex. Ascending a steep slope at a spot known as Jack Upperton’s Gibbet, he saw* a blue flash appear for about 30 seconds in the sky above some trees about a hundred yards away. lie estimates that it was no more than 80 yards above the earth, and burned with a bright blue flame, "like methylated spirit.” Its flight was horizontal throughout, and it is therefore impossible that it could have risen from the earth, as in the case of a rocket. There was no report or sound of any kind accompanying the disturbance. Hiding on a short distance, Mr. Thorp came upon two youths, whom lje , questioned, asking if tjiey had seen a flash in the sky. They replied, "Yes, •we saw a ball of fire,” and corroborated his estimation as to its height above the earth.
