GREAT SPORT
Thrills at Takapana SPRING MEETING OPENS SUCCESSFULLY AiIOST successful oldening of tlie Spring Meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club was registered on Saturday, a large crowd witnessing an exciting afternoon’s racing. The fixture is to conclude to-day.
The popular new secretary of the Takapuna Jockey Club, Mr. F. X). McVay, had everything- in first class order, and the very large attendance caused no hitch in the arrangements. Indeed, there must have been a record crowd present. The weather was fine, and the course in splendid order. The financial result of the opening day's campaign must be viewed in a favourable light, for :in addition to the increased gate figures, the totalisator returns showed a substantial increase of £15,312, the turnover on Saturday being £57,761, against £ 42,449 on the opening day of the last spring meeting, which was held in wet weather. JOCKEY INJURED The well-known horseman, Roy Reed, while riding Prodice in the Cambria Handicap, was struck in the eye by a flying bit of earth, and had to receive medical attention. He was not able to ride again during the day. At the start of the Ponui Handicap Nassock's rider, H. Wiggins, sustained facial injuries when he was caught in« the tapes. The mischief did not prevent the popular light-weight from fulfilling his later engagement.
STEWARDS’ INQUIRIES Soon after the Cambria Handicap field was dispatched, several green horses bunched, and as a result of the scrimmage The Begum unshipped her rider, W. H. Jones, who was uninjured. The subsequent inquiry showed the occurrence to have been accidental. When the field had gone half a furlong in the Takapuna Plate contest there was some interference, by which several horses lost around, among them being the well-backed filly Ti Tree. An inquiry was opened and adjourned until this morning. Notes on the racing and details of' concluding results follow: MAIDEN IN DIVISIONS The Melrose Maiden Stakes opened proceedings, and this was run in two divisions, the money being forthcoming for the Tidal-Whaka King bracket £7Ol, the Wyoming-Young Pretender bracket £SOO, and Frowning Beauty - The Immigrant bracket £403, and Orchus £348. Kyngzone led out in the first division from The Immigrant, White Light, Whaka King, Prince Lupin and Alai Ngaro. At the end of two furlongs Whaka King had taken up the running from Orbit and Kyngzone, and following in order were The Immigrant, Saucy Lass, Tidal, Zane Grey, Prince Lupin, Pompeius, Brampton and Ahi Ngaro. Into the straight the order was Kyngzone, Orchus, Whaka King, The Immigrant, Saucy Lass, Pompeius, Bannock, Brampton and Prince Lupin. Once in line The Immigrant came through and won comfortably by half a length from Saucy Lass, with Whaka King a couple of lengths away. Pompeius was fourth, and then came Orbit, Bannock, Brampton, Frowning Beauty, Prince Lupin, Kyngzone, Tidal and Amos. ORCHUS CLEARS OUT
In the second section Diamond Queen went out fast, followed by Fane, Air King, Orchus, Glen Maree, Restaurant, Bright Comet, Young Pretender and Wyoming. At the halfmile Diamond Queen and Orchus were together in the van, with The Lover, Wyoming, Young Pretender, Glen Maree, Valsier, Bombarder and Flying Tresses. Orchus drew clear crossing the top and led into the straight from Bombarder, Young Pretender, Flying Tresses, Wyoming, Ponticus and The Lover. Orchus left the field in the run in to score comfortably by four lengths. Bombarder was second, a similar distance ahead of Wyoming, with Air King fourth. Young Pretender was close up next, and Valsier, The Lover, Restaurant, Flying Tresses and Glen Maree followed in that order.
RED COMET WINS WELL There were no defections, from the Tiri Highweight Handicap, Bold Front £958, Uralla £BBS, Levenside £730 and Wedding March £709 parrying most money. From a fine dispatch Bold Front led out from Potoanui, Daddy’s Girl, Red Comet, Wedding March and Poteen. Passing the stands the first time Daddy’s Girl and Potoanui were together ahead of Bold Front, following being Uralla. Red Comet, Poteen, Levenside, Lora Thurnham, Slump, Gold Rain and Quinvardia. At the half-mile Red Comet had gone to the front from Daddy’s Girl, next in order being Uralla, Potoanui, Poteen, Levenside and Quinvardia. Red Comet was still at the head turning for home, being a length ahead of Bold Front, with Wedding March, Potoanui, Daddy’s Girl and Uralla close up. Red Comet did best -over the final furlong to win by half a length from Uralla, with Bold Front a similar distance away third. Wedding March was fourth, and then over the line came Daddy’s Girl, Gold Rain, Potoanui, Levenside, Lord ’Thurnham, Slump and Kamehameha. NANCY LEE'S HAT TRICK The Cheltenham Handicap saw the consistent Nancy Lee complete her hat trick, having won at her two preceding starts and now scoring again. Aussie’s great gallop 3 r esterday caused him to be made a big favourite with £2,118, while the next fancies were Nancy Lee £1,256 and High Finance £1,152. A good start saw Nancy Lee and High Finance the first to show out from Major Abbey, Waltzer, Aussie, Nastori and Automne. At the end of a couple of furlongs High Finance was two lengths clear of Nancy Lee, with Major Abbey, Waltzer, Aussie, Nastori and Automne running in close order. High Finance turned for home half a length ahead of Nancy Lee, with Aussie a length back, and Major Abbey, Dave, Waltzer and Nastori next in order. Nancy Lee and Hjgh Finance had a good set-to in the run to the judge, the former prevailing by a neck. Aussie was three parts of a length away, and the next to finish were Dave, Waltzer, Major Abbey, Nastori and Automne. PHAOLA WINS THE CUP Royal Mint and Wedding March were the course scratchings for the Alison Cup, which saw the lightweights triumph. Llandudno £1,592 j and Valkon £1,650 were the best backed in a big pool, while of the remainder there was some money for Transformer £1,511, Eden Hall £958,; Desert Glow £640, Mint Leaf £614 and Phaola £599. They left the barrier in line. Llandudno being the first ; to show out from King Lu. Valkon, Eden Hall, Master Doon and Papatu, the last pair being Mint Leaf and Transformer. Passing the post the first time Llandudno had a slight advantage over Valkon, and just behind them were Eden Hall and King Lu, with Transformer, Phaolo, Desert Glow, Master Doon, Papatu and Golden Krist, Mint Leaf being last. At the five furlongs Llandudno and Valkon were still the pilots, with Transformer right up, and Eden Hall, Phaola, Desert Glow, Golden Krist, Papatu, King Lu, Master Doon and Mint Leaf running in that order. Two furlongs from home Papatu and King Lu made forward moves, and Llandudno. Valkon, Transformer, Phaola, Desert Glow. Master Papatu and Desert Glow were in close order,, with every prospect of a finish, Phaola was in the van half [
way up the running, and she sprang a mild surprise by winning by half a length from Papatu. both being at nice prices. Eden Hall was three parts of a length back third, and Valkon fourth. King Lu, who met with interference at the turn, was fifth, and next in order were Desert Glow, Golden
Krist, Llandudno, Master Doon, Transformer and Mint Leaf, the lastnamed being unable to handle the turns. KATARENA FINISHES WELL A good field of 16 lined up for the Cambria Handicap, best backed being Patodawn £961, Prodice £B9l, Voiimond £B6O, Katarena £702 and Red Lion £591. Immediately after the start there was some jostling, as a resuit of which The Begum lost her rider. Nankin Blue and Red Lion began best from Maureiana, Lady r Mestor, Catonian, White Wings and Patodawn. At the end of a couple of furlongs Catonian and Maureiana were leading Red Lion, Katarena, Patodawn, Prodice, White Wings and Moehau, this being the order into the straight. Here Katarena came on to win by half a length from Catonian, who was a length in front of Patodawn. Maureiana was fourth, and Prodice (who drew 14 marble), fifth, this pair being followed by White Wings, Red Lion. Volimond, Nankin Blue, Moehau and Lady Mestor. TI TREE’E GREAT BURST
The Takapuna Plate was productive of a great race, which was only spoiled by some very rough riding after the field had gone half a furlong, as a result of which Ti Tree was knocked right back to third last. The favourite was Town Bird, whom R. Reed had to get off through getting a knock on an eye in the preceding race, with £2,073, with big money for Antrim Boy £1.647. Ti Tree £1,309 and King Peg £957. A great start saw Town Bird, on the rails, hop out smartly, followed by King Arch, Modest Boy, Royal Doulton and Subdivision, while as the result of jostling Taku Tama got knocked back Ti Tree also suffered severely. After they had gone two furlongs Town Bird still had charge from King Arch, and following them were Whaka King, Antrim Bqy, Modest Boy, Value, Miss Potoa, Lady Robinson and Macroom. The last-named made a run crossing the top, and Ti Tree later made her brilliant run on the outside. Town Bird led to the straight from Abbess, King Arch, Antrim Boy, Miss Potoa, Whaka King, Subdivision, Royal Doulton, Storm Fiend, Lady Robinson, Macroom and Ti Tree. As they straightened up Macroom was in the van, but Ti Tree set out after her, and in a rare finish they dead-heated. Royal Doulton was a length away, Gust in front of Subdivision. Then came Antrim Boy, Town Bird, Miss Potoa, Modest Boy, Storm Fiend and Judge’s Box.
Ti Tree was terribly unlucky, and her effort showed what a good thing she would have been with a fair run. Macroom was a consistent performer last season, and yet she was allowed to pay nearly half a century for a dead heat. PIET MAKES GOOD Fifteen came out for the Ponui Handicap, and in an even betting race best supported were Acushla £1.451, Piet £ 1,138, Taurimu £916, Nassock £9lO and Illingar £616. At the start Nassock and Baby Bun were left, the
order going out of the straight being Desert Knight, Cynthia N., Taurimu Luxurious, Acushla, Salamander, Prince Lupin and Aurieulus. The order going along the back was Desert Night, Cynthia N., Highflown, Luxurious, Salamander, Piet, Golden Wedding, Illingar. Baby Bun and Bannock. Crossing the top the field bunched, those in the van into the straight being Cynthia N., Desert Knight, Bannock, Golden Wedding, Piet, Illingar and Aurieulus. Half way up the straight Golden Wedding was clear, but she failed to survive when Piet challenged, the latter getting up to win by a long head. Cynthia N. was a length and a-half further off, with Aurieulus fourth. Then came Acushla. Illingar, Taurimu, Baby Bun, Bannock, Highflown, Salamander and Luxurious.
IN THE SHADE’S NARR W WIN The final event, the Borough Handicap, saw 17 runners come out, and thjfc three-year-old In the Shade was ny t i,4e a big favourite, being entrusted vtft’n £1,836, while there was also wome support for Day Guard Tinokoa £867, New Moon and Hipo £686. A fine start let Ayjurere jump to the front from Day Guard, Te Koroke, Serar.g, In the Shade, Hipo, Quincoma and Archeen.
