W A CLEVER FRAUD”
money order telegrams FORGED GAOL AND PROBATION Offences committed four years ago were admitted before Mr. Justice Reed this morning, when Leslie Ward and Hilton Richard Stanley appeared for sentence on four charges of forgery and uttering at Auckland. Mr. Fleming, for Ward, said that at the time of the offences, which were the forging of money-order telegrams, Ward was 20 years of age. The plan had been put before him by Stanley, who was a telegraphist. He had gone away on two occasions to resist the temptation, but had finally fallen. His employers were willing to take him back, and, counsel would ask for probation. His Honour said it was with hesitation he would admit Ward to probation for three years, on the special condition that he repay £67, half the amount stolen. As far as Stanley was concerned, his was a bad case. He had reached a responsible position and took advantage of it to work a clever fraud. His Honour was glad to see Stanley had exculpated Ward. He would be detained for reformative treatment for a period of two years.
