TE KUITI HOSPITAL
BENEFIT CONCERT Both the Empress and People’s Theatres were crowded on Saturday evening on the occasion of a hospital benefit concert given by the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ Association, which was given in the two houses simultaneously, and as a result of their efforts the Te Kuiti Hospital will, with the Government subsidy, benefit to the extent of practically £2OO. There was not a dull moment in the whole programme, every artist being heartily encored. Perhaps the most outstanding features in a company of all-round excellence were the fine rendering by Mr. Arthur Allen, baritone, of “The Muleteer of Malaga” and as an encore number, "The Volga Boatman”; Miss Beryl Smith in “Hills of Donegal”; whistling solos by Mr. H. Maxwell; the humorous items by Messrs. Rex Yates and C. N. Rabone; and the duet, “A Paradise for Two,” by Miss Dorothy Youd and Mr. Dudley Wrathall.
The following artists also took a prominent part: Miss Mary Andrews, in a character sketch, “Charm”; Mr. Harold Hill, tenor, “The Star”; Miss Stella Thompson, mezzo soprano, ‘The Little Damozel”; and Mr. H. G. Watts, who was accompanied by Messrs. Maxwell, Yates and Rabone, in a skit on popular townspeople, which was greatly appreciated. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, thanked the president of the association, Mr. W. H. Prentice, for the splendid entertainment provided. In reply Mr. Prentice stated that his association had, during the last 14 or 15 years, raised £90,000 for charity, and was glad to know that their efforts had been appreciated. During the interval Mr. A. Nealon created much amusement by auctioning a black lamb, this realising between £2O and £3O.
