CIVIC COMMISSION.—The Governor of New South Wales. Sir Dudley de Chair, has given his assent to the Sydney Civic Commission Bill. —A. and N.Z. MURDER CHARGE.—At Brisbane Mrs. Norah Scheib has been committed for trial on a charge of murdering her husband.—A. and N.Z. ALGIERS FLOODS.—A message from Algiers says heavy floods occurred there, particularly in the Department of Oran. The town of Nostagnem is inundated and 40 people have been drowned.—A. and N.Z. DEATH AT SEA.—Mr. Richard E. Jamieson, aged 61, managing director of the Gregory Tyre Company, of Vancouver. died on Thursday on board the Aorangi. when the vessel was nearing Honolulu, and was buried at sea. He was on a business trip to New Zealand. —A. and N.Z. EMPIRE PRESS UNlON.—Major J. J. Astor, Conservative member of Parliament for Dover, and chairman of “The Times'' Publishing Company, has been elected chairman of the council of the Empire Press Union, in succession to Mr. J. L. Garvin, editor of the “Observer.” who has resigned.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. PEER’S ESTATE—The Eari of Derby, who recently sold Lis estates at Bootle, in a letter to the Mayor of Bootle, says he realised that heavy death duties would be payable on his death, and so he reluctantly decided that it was advisable to sell in hie lifetime, rather than that there should be a forced sale after his death.—A. and ; N.Z. INDUSTRIAL PEACK. —Lord Aber- | conway, the Marquess of Londonderry, | Sir Alfred Mond, Sir Josiah Stamp, and 1 other industrial leaders have sent a ! letter to the Trades Unions Council seeking a conference w’ith the general council of the unions to discuss industrial relationships, and possible steps \to enable British industry to meet foreign competition.—A. and N.Z.
