Bjf Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Heed. 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day.
In the Assembly the Premier, Mr. T. R. Bavin, stated that up to date £577,000 had been collected under the Family Endowment Act, and only £75,000 had been paid, and further claims would be paid as they were investigated.
As showing the incidence of the levy, be said that inquiries had been made of 25 leading wholesale and retail manufacturing establishments, and revealed that the tax upon them amounted to £l4o,()00 per annum, while the total disbursements to their employees were only £5,500. He added that the Government had been told in many quarters that the levying of the tax was unquestionably causing unemployment. Mr. J. T. Lang, ex-Premier, strongly Protested against the Government’s decision not to compensate ex-Commis-sioner Treble, as a repudiation of an undertaking by his Government. The Present Government was acting along lines of viciousness.—A. and N.Z.
