AT FORBURY PARK
DOWNFALL OF FAVOURITES PRESIDENT’S TO DALNAHINE l Special to THE SIX.) DUNEDIN. Friday. The Spring - Meeting of the Forbury Park Trotting Club was held under most unpleasant conditions. The high wind that was in evidence was a fair imitation of a cyclone, and made it difficult for spectators to make their investments and reach a safety zone in time to see the racing. Following on the heavy rains of the previous day. the course dried fast and provided good footing. There was a fair attendance. The totnlisator handled £21,016. against £18,666 on the opening day last year. NEVER IN DOUBT With -T. McLennan in the saddle the Kurow-trained gelding Sid Wilkes never allowed the Roslyn Handicap to reach the doubtful column. He made two breaks on the trip and then won, easing hp by a dozen lengths. Ria Audubon refused to strike the trot. Genevieve got to the end of the first two furlongs in 40 2-5, after making a break a few yards before reaching the disc. At the stand Sid Wilkes was well clear of Major Homo. Len Wood, Hawkesbury’s Pride and Dolores. He passed the half-mile in 1.15 3-5, and got to the mile in 2.27 4-5. Len Wood went a good race, and Dolores gave a disappointing exhibition. Jade was slow over the first half mile, but went well for the remainder of the journey.
The winner is an aged gelding by Marvin Wilkes from a Del Paso mare, lie is owned by Mr. A. T. Valentine, but does not shape like developing into a high-grade perfohmer.
FIREBRAND BURNS THE TRACK The Progressive Handicap was a twohorse affair, it being a question of Firebrand having sufficient ability to down the leader. Stockade Junior. The latter whisked away from the barrier and was ten lengths clear of Firebrand when the furlong disc was reached. With a round completed Firebrand dropped in behind Stockade Junior, and here O. E. Hooper allowed him to shelter till the homo stretch was reached. Then he took him out and the two pacers came home step for step, with Firebrand half a length to the good at the end. Stockade Junior was unfortunate in having to make all the pace, and in meeting such as Firebrand, a gelding by Denver Huon from a mare by Prince Imperial. He is owned by Mr. D. Spence. The first mile was negotiated in 2.28 2-5, the mile and a quarter in 3.3 2-5, and the full journey in 3.56 2-5. which was about 2.25 to the mile. Sadie Huon misfired in her gait going along the back the last time, and Slump, Kinney Dillon, Nihilist Junior and Wild Pigeon were early in the ruck. The back-marker, Nelson McElwyn, went a good race and looks like developing into a high-class horse, though ho finished on three legs so to speak. HOT ONE DOWNED Desborough came home four lengths in front of a hot favourite in General Bingen, who was hard ridden for the last furlong. Queen’s General led for a furlong, where Omaha went into the lead and passed the half-mile post in 1.8 2-5, with Desborough, Four Bells and Robert Bell racing in single file three furlongs from home. General Bingen slipped through into third place going to the far bend. Desborough headed Omaha, with General Bingen pacing in bold style. General Bingen headed Omaha at the bend for home, but he could not overhaul Desborough. Doctor Dillon gave a pleasing showing in fourth place. Robert Bell, Lady Embrace and Jolly Chimes were uninterested parties half a mile from home. Desborough was well ridden "by his trainer and part-owner, J. F. O’Connell, of Waikouaiti. He was bred by A. Pringle, being by Logan Pointer from Lily F. BROKE OFTEN, BUT WON After making several breaks Swiftbine got up to win the Spring Handicap narrowly from Underviewer, who, with one exception, and that during the last few strides, never put a foot wrong on the trip. It was a poor contest. Master Peter swerved when the barriers were let go. Avalanche went to the front at the end of a furlong and went round well clear of Master Peter, with Swiftbine, Nelson Ata and Randolph, going in the air at various stages of the contest. The first two furlongs were done in 40 2-5, and the first half-mile in 1.20 2-5. Avalanche went to the mile in 2.30 4-5, with Underviewer just in behind him, the pair being well clear of Master Peter, Nelson Ata and Swiftbine. There was no change till a mile and a-half had been completed, the watch reading 3.44 for the distance. At this stage Underviewer went away from Avalanche, who was commencing to tire very badly. At the far turn Swiftbine came into the picture, and though Underviewer had four lengths lead of him at the bend for home R. "W. Franks got the son of El Carbine and Swift home by a narrow margin from Underviewer, who finished on a break. Randolph pulled in for third money, being fully 12 lengths behind. Underviewer, the winner, was bred by his owner, Mr. T. T. Ritchie. HOW DALNAHINE WON For three-parts of the journey in the President’s Handicap seven horses held a winning chance, but after that Dalnahine said good-day to the field and went away to win with ridiculous ease. Since joining J. Henderson’s stable the son of Brent Locanda and Pleasant Drive has done remarkably well, and he still promises to earn further stake money. The big disappointment of the field was Away, who failed badly after getting a happy dispatch, a good passage, and holding a winning position half a mile from home. In the home stretch he faded when everybody expected him to make a big effort. He was advertising soreness in a front leg when he pulled up. Author Jinks was under restraint for a mile, being at the rear of the bunch when the field had gone half a mile. Then Wallis allowed him to move up, and over the last half mile he put in some great work, being in second place at the wire. The surprise packet of the party was Bonny Logan, who came on in the straight after sheltering behind th© pacemakers for a mile and seven furlongs. She finished third. Trampfast mixed it with the pacers and did well to be in fourth place at the judge. Fight Ever broke up at the start. Talent paced well and should be handy before the meeting is concluded. Bell Harold and Downcast made the pace for a mile and a-half and then knocked up. The first half-mile was negotiated in 1.11 2-5, the mil© in 2.21, the mile and a-half in 3.28 4-5, and the full journey in 4.35 2-5. WON ON THE POST Desert Star led Quality to within 50yds of home in the Caversham Handicap, and cleverly driven by C. Donald she beat Desert Star by half a length. When half a mile had been covered Evelyn Locanda was at the back of the field, due to a break she made just prior to reaching that point. When a mile and a furlong was accounted for all but Evelyn Locanda were racing in close formation, Desert Star being in the lead, with Quality, Fashion Queen, Lingfield, Kate Thorpe and Pointalena following him closely. Three furlongs from home Fashion Queen was ; beaten, and Lingfield and Pointalena ! improved their positions. though i neither ever looked like overhauling : Desert Star and Quality. Pointalena
: succeeded in beating Lingfield for third 1 money. Quality has improved wonderfully under C. Donald, who has got the mare to begin well and to develop
stamina. She is a half-sister to Cardinal Logan, her sire being Denver Huon. Acre stayed on pretty well and will annex further races before the season is very far advanced. Desert Star is an honest pacer who had the worst of the deal in having to make all the running. He will prevail before long. A GOOD PERFORMANCE Messrs. Smaill and Had field’s aged mare Ingle Bingen gave her backers a fright in the Dominion Handicap by faulting badly at the start and losing
a lot of ground. When she settled to the trot she made up her leeway in gradual style, and with a round to go she joined the leading division, and
staying on in remarkable fashion she beat Young Blake by half a length. But for making one bad break Young Blake would have won. Herbilwyn led for a mile and a half and then stopped almost to a walk. Proud Ata was similarly affected. Engagement, who was favourite, ran badly, and Nighborn and Frisco Beau both were on their bad behaviour. The winner is by Nelson Bingen from the American mare Nearette, the dam of Glenelg. The last mile and a half was compassed in 3.37, the last four furlongs being done in 1.11 4-5. OUTSIDER GETS HOME The contest for the Dash Handicap was spoiled by Avenger. Menember, Event and Terence Dillon all failing to get off properly. Lady Embrace, who usually is an unreliable beginner, dashed to the front and led past the stand with Jolly Chimes, Bingen Lad, Bob Logan and Haunui racing in close order. Going out of the straight Avenger came on the scene, but he went to a break going along the back and dropped right back. Rounding the bend for home Bob Logan drew into second place, but despite a valiant effort Bob Logan could not reach Lady Embrace, who won comfortably by a margin of two lengths. All through the race Bingen Lad was well enough placed, but he failed to display any pep over the final stages. Haunui went a funny race. Half a mile from home she looked to be beaten, but when the straight was reached she came home with all sails set to fill third place. Had she been judiciously driven she might have paid a dividend. Jolly Chimes had every opportunity and did everything right. but lack of speed found him down the course. Lady Embrace was well handled by her trainer, H. Gaskill, and the success of Mr. R. F. Ledinghams’ mare was popular.
