MARK MEMORIAL CUP
WAIKATO’S CHIEF EVENT CLASSY FIELD ENGAGED PROSPECTS OF RUNNERS The Mark Memorial Cup to be decided on Saturday next at Hamilton promises to provide trotting enthusiasts with plenty of excitement. The field is a classy one, and as handicapper Gooseman has brought the contestants well together, there should be a good field at the post. Jewel Pointer’s wonderful run of 4.23 3-5 on Saturday at Alexandra Park, it was only to be expected that he <vould be asked to concede big starts in the principal event of the Waikato fixture, in which he was given a nomination. And in placing the briliant pacer on 4.24 the adjuster cannot be accused of being severe with J. Shaw's charge, or on the other hand of taking any risk with the horse. From such a long way back, however, as 16Syds, it is hardly likely that lie will undertake such a task, as owing to. the class engage!! *' there is nothing to take him along and the distance from the back mark to the nearest competitors is so great. THE LIMIT BRIGADE Of these handicapped on the bahtT” 4.38, Kockburn, Daytime and Bold Bill appear to hold the best hand. Rockburn is capable of a better -showing than that which he produced recently* Daytime seems to be coming right, hh<f * the racing he experienced Tast week will prove beneficial. Bold Bill, if he ke got right, is a good sort, and while most of his successes have been registered over a few furlongs less than the Cup distance he can pull out a solid two miles. Of the quartette on 12yds Great Actress at once looms before the vision.
GREAT ACTRESS NICELY PLACED
The Great Audubon mare is endowed with a rare turn cf speed and can stay. Since joining D. Withers’s stable the mare has improved a good deal and was an easy winner on the opening day of the recent Addington carnivaL Wallroon had every chance on Wednesday in a two-mile race, run to his liking, but faded at the critical moment. Nelson Tasker hi ng on well, over this distance the other day, and should do better next time out. Gold Jacket will, providing he gees off smartly, be one to be reckoned with, and will perhaps all things being even, give the best in it a hard tussle. LOCH MOIGH A STAYER In the next section is Loch Moigh, Direct Morning, Uncle Bert and Waikaha. The latter, good trotter that he . is, may find it difficult to try and go with some of the hoppled division that will be engaged. Uncle Bert, although unsuccessful at the Otahuhu fixture, cannot be overlooked. He was unlucky on Wednesday, otherwise he would have been knocking at the door of the box, so he is worth keeping in view. Direct Morning does not seem to be ready for such a heat, but Loch Moigh must command the greatest respect The Palmerston North pacer lias won over this distance, and in his last twomile start, at Hawera, he was narrowly beaten by Trampfast after a desperate effort. Loch Moigh is coming on the right way and will be in nice condition for his race. THOSE FURTHER BACK Of those further back Goldman, Dillon (36). Amaris and Florent (60), will probably attract most attention. Goldman has not lost his punch y et » and olf a 4.35 mark will keep the best of them busy. Dick Dillon is showing up in his essays and to get a verdict shortly, although he appears to fade over the last htt:le pinch. Florent is capable of making the best of them scamper, judging by his splendid performances at the Otahuhu meeting. The Florizel gelding i in excellent heart and will have a lot of friends next week if started. The manner in which Amaris did his work at the meeting just concluded point to him being in the danger zone when this event comes up for decision. made a creditable showing wner started in the big race on the nna day, and was putting in telling won at the finish. Half a dozen that appear to hold good prospects are Grea • Actress, Loch Moigh, Gold Jacket Uncle Bert, Florent and Amaris.
