STOLEN CHEQUES
TAYLOR CONVICTED TWO YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT (Front Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The charges of receiving two cheques for £lO 0s 5d and £lB ISs 4d. knowing them to have been stolen from a mail bag. brought against William Harold Alelville Taylor in the Hamilton Supreme Court yesterday, were concluded by accused being sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. It was admitted by counsel that Taylor had previously been convicted of theft, but he had lived a decent life since. In passing sentence, Air. Justice Herdman said Taylor had been properly convicted. The case was an unusual one, but was very serious. Of 1,000 packets in the missing bag only two had been traced. The community placed great trust in the post office, and generally speaking, that trust had been well placed. There was no doubt the accused knew something about the disappearance of the bag. In passing the sentence of two years his Honour made the sentences concurrent.
