A CURTAIN CAUSERIE
There are several excellent reasons in favour of frequent washing of curtains, quite apart fro*n the psychological effect of bright and spotless window draperies. First and foremost, a couple of squeezes through a nice soapy lather will not wear out the material so much as a single wash that entails a lot of rubbing to remove ingrained dirt. Have your curtains down, always, at the slightly soiled stage. You won’t regret it. Then, if they are coloured, the j bright tints will remain fast much ! longer for a similar reason. Hard rubbing will make them fade, whereas if the curtains are tubbed at frequent intervals, and steeped in salt water as a preliminary each washing day, they will keep their coloured freshness for a considerable period before they need dipping. Apropos of dipping, curtains with patterns need present no problem to the housewife. Dyeing by the wet process is not applicable, i of course, to designs in numerous colours. i>ut a dry colour method may be used with wonderful renovating effect. When rha curtains are washed in the ordinary way, the design can be crayoned in again with special crayons. It is quite a fascinating job. When it is completed, all that is necessary is to lay a sheet of white tissue oaper over your artistic handiwork —vou can introduce quite a new and different colour scheme lrom the original, of course, if you prefer—and press with a warm iron to remove the superfluous colouiing matter. The ; rest will sink in and remain fast.
