BUTTER DAMAGED

PORT CAROLINE'S CARGO BULK FROM AUCKLAND By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 12.20 p.m. LONDON, Wednes. The damaged meat of the Port Caroline was loaded at Wanganui and Timaru. Survey of the butter and cheese has not yet been completed, but it is known that 14,000 boxes of butter and 800 crates of cheese are seriously water-damaged. Some butter is tainted, with a stale meaty flavour and it will be necessary to scrape off the outside before it is saleable. It will have to be submitted to the sanitary authorities before sale. Samples will be sent to the Cambridge research station to determine the fitness for selling. Eighty per cent, of the damaged butter was from Auckland.

Eight thousand carcases of mutton have been condemned. The damage was apparently due to small meat port inside the ship starting a leak during heavy weather while the ship was rounding Cape Horn. —A. and N.Z.

A London cablegram received yesterday read as follows: An examination of the cargo of ttie steamer Port Caroline disclosed that the contents of No. 2 hold was badly damaged by sea water. The hold contained S.OUO carcases of mutton, S,OOO crates of cheese, and 30,000 boxes of butter. The question of the insurers’ liability is now under discussion. Auckland supplied 50,021 boxes of the Port Caroline’s cargo, of which 30,000 boxes came from the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, Ltd.
