“BEST COLLECTION OUTSIDE OF LONDON”
JAPANESE COLOUR PRINTS The General for Japan, Mr. 5. M. Tokugawa, was agr«(i£*ably surprised yesterday in Auck-' > land, visiting the exhibition of Japanese colour prints at the Art Gallery, he declared that he had not seen a finer collection since he left London. Mr. Tokugawa, who was accompanied 'by Mr. I. Kishi, vice-consul at Sydney, spent some considerable time at the exhibition. He .will pay another visit before he leaves the city for the South. Many of the difficulties that confronted Mr. John Barr, art director, and Mr. T. V. Gulliver, who were responsbile for the arrangement of the show, were soon explained by Mr. Tokugawa, to whom the Japanese inscriptions were, of course, as simple as English is to us. Mr. Tokugawa carried away a catalogue with him which he promised to study at his leisure. Captain Humphreys, wh0,..-together with Mr. H. S. Dadley, placed part of his collection -on loan in the gallery, -gave another -interesting “talk” last evening. ' - • -
He- 'fractal the development of the art from its rise with Harunobu until its highest level of excellence 30 years later, and its decline toward the close of the 19th century. The lecturer freely illustrated his Remarks with other examples from his collection and that of Mr. Dadley. His instructive discourse was greatly appreciated. The exhibition will close definitely on November 30*
