SWIMMERS MEET

WAITEMATA CLUB’S OPENING SOME EXCELLENT RACES The swimming season for 1927-28 was opened in excellent manner at the Tepid Baths last evening, when the Waitemata Amateur Swimming Club staged its first carnival. Although the attendance could have been better, there could have been no complaint as far as the swimming was concerned. The times recorded were excellent for a first carnival, and the finishes, in almost every case, close and exciting. A great many new and promising swimmers came to light, J. Farrell and H. C. Watson impressing mostly. MISS CHAMPION IN FORM

Miss Edna Champion shone among the intermediate girls, and won her heat and the final of the 50yds handicap, each time leaving a good margin between the other placed girls. The

veteran, J. Enwright, was also prominent, while among the juniors there was some good swimming. The water polo match between Waitemata A and Parnell resulted in a win for the former by 8 goals to nil. The winners Played a great game and completely outclassed Parnell. J. En-

wright was responsible for the majority of the goals. The carnival was run off without a hitch, and in good , credit being due to the various officials concerned. Harvey, Parnell, 6sec, 2; Miss D. Grant, Grammar, 2sec, 3. Time, 32 3-ssec. Final: Miss Champion 1, Miss Grant 2, Miss M. Bell 3. This was an excellent race. Miss Champion sustained her lead and got well away to win by a yard, with the others close up. Time, 32sec.

Breaststroke Handicap, 100yds. —R. S. Cameron, Parnell. Ssec, 1; J. Magee, Parnell, ssec, 2; F. G. Ansell, Waitemata, 2 sec. 3.

Three others, including the lady champion, Miss Gladys Pidgeon. also started. Cameron and Magee had the race practically between them, the former winning by a yard. Miss Pidgeon. on ssec, was fourth. Time, lrnin 26 3-ssec. City Schools Championship Relay, 200 yds.—Nelson Street A 1, Napier Street 2. The winners defeated Napier Street by a length and hold the Sandford Cup, held last year by the defeated team. Time, 2min. 23seo.
