It is hard to know what Wanganui 'vas driving at. The incident which led to its representative being disqualified was perfectly clear. Savidan and Gibbons were lighting out a thrilling neck-and-neck finish down the straight in the mile championship, when, in the last few strides, Gibbons accidentally jostled Savidan, throwing him out of his stride. The collision settled any chance Savidan had of wanning, and Gibbons went on and breasted the tape first. It was perfectly clear to everyone in the vicinity what had happened. The matter was Immediately reported to Mr McVilly. who was standing within a few yards of the writer at the time, and from the position he was in, he had a perfectly good view of what had happened. There was no surprise among hard and fast followers of the sport who saw the incident when the decision was announced. It was certainly bad luck for Gibbons, who might have beaten Savidan even if the collision had not occurred. But there is no saylnfl—it was such a desperately close 90—that either man might have 'rton, and under the circumstances, only one decision was possible.
