BONDS OR BANDS OF EMPIRE
Sir,— On© odd feature of the delightful little garden party given at the Ellerslie Racecourse yesterday to Mr. and Mrs. Amery ought to be mentioned. The purpose of the occasion was to strengthen the bonds of Empire, and the humid air was heavy with eloquent talk of Empire unity and fine patriotic sentiment. But the band that played soft, appropriate music among the palms, was that itinerant orchestra which one hears so often on ferry boats and on hotel doorsteps. Was its presence meant to symbolise the League of' Nations spirit? It is an alien band. In view of the civic money spent on maintaining the Municipal Band surely its services or those of several of its members might have been secured for a pleasant Imperial occasion. Bands of Empire should be bracketed with “bonds of Empire” as a patriotic slogan. TROMBONE.
