THE PROSPECTS REVIEWED
IN all probability there will be ten races at Ashhurst tomorrow, although five scratchings will obviate a division in the Maiden. A review of the big fields appears below.
ri>TURDAY’S form at Levin should] b furnish a good guide for the Ash--I,urst meeting to-morrow, but in this | n “ as on Saturday, but more so, 'he draw for barrier positions will be ! For Saturday's win Mister Gamp has -one up ten pounds, and as this was ujg debut over the sticks further improvement is hoped for. Two that finished behind him. Vexatious and Chrissarto, are again in, while other likely ones are Revel, Braemar, Rataniko, Lombardo, Lady Faye and Lady tore. Nevertheless Mister Gamp and Vexatious will no doubt be the public fancies. . . , , The Maiden race is to be run in two divisions. 19 being the safety number from the five furlong peg. MAIDEN STAKES 5 furlongs
The start of this event takes place on an awkward bend, only slight, but sufficient to make it imperative that a horse near the inner position should -et away to outclass those wide out, and with a field of 13 to-morrow some will be hopelessly out of it from the first Bonogne is an erratic customer, although his recent efforts have been more consistent than hitherto, hipsoi has shown a return to form, and Lausanne apparently prefers a large course. Mireusonta won nicely at Levin, and his nine pounds penalty will not hinder him. Arrow Lad is a good three-year-old, and a winner at Dannevirke earlier in the season. Huikai will want a race, but the speedy Epistle is reported as being back to her beM. Standard and Deluge read the most liked of those further down the list. Probably Arrow Lad, Mireusonta and Epistle will be in most demand. Another big field will be saddled up for the Siberia Hack, and it seems a certainty that there will be two diviaions, aa- follows: SIBERIA HACK HANDICAP Of £125; 6 furlongs
suited in the first section and as they are both seasoned they may be the elect of backers. Second Division
In this division they appear to be a fairlv even lot, with Imitation ana Thi Raider likely to be in most demand. Thirteen remain in the ASHHURST CUP Of £250; li miles
The top weight failed rather badly at; Gisborne when tried over ten furlongs, \ and the impression left then was that ; he was not a genuine middle distance 1 horse, although he may require some
lacing to tune him up for these events. Royal Game is still travelling, and Rowley is much preferred to him. Rouex is a possibility, and so too is Waicullus, who was behind Paitonu and Anolo at Levin. Teri reads nicely, and outside of these Novar is the only other that could be fancied. There seems little doubt that the good favourite will be Rowley, with Waicullus and Teri next best supported. The seven furlong hack follows^ KOMAKO HANDICAP Of £125; 7 furlongs.
The start is situated somewhat similar to the six at Whangarei, although not quite so difficult, for the bend is bigger. Kalos, Rising Star and Maui will not lack friends. The first-named is in fine fettle, and raced well at Riccarton. Another open event is the RAUMAI HANDICAP
Reports from Hastings credit Queen’s Choice as galloping well, while others also that may be in the limelight are
Bonogne, Decoy Bird, Epistle, Royal Land, Brigadier Bill, Road Hog, Horomea, Starboard Light and Our Jack. These are all useful sorts, but the fancied division may comprise Queen’s Choice, Epistle and Horomea. The meeting concludes with the MANAWATU GORGE HANDICAP Of £125; 1 mile
The topweignL has a steadier to carry, and he will have to be at lus best to pull it off. They are not a. good lot, however, and judiciously handled Wanderlust, Excess and Archon will come in for big support.
