ONEHUNGA BOROUGH
COUNCIL MEETING NEW MOTOR REGULATIONS At the ordinary meeting of the One- j ltunga Borough Council last evening a : letter was received from the Mount 11 os- j kill Road Board urging the council to repair Mount Albert Road between Manulcau Road and Crown Street, and also to j put Pleasant Street, a boundary road, in order, each body to pay half the cost. It i was decided to proceed with the worn forthwith. The combined fish dealers of Onehunga | wrote protesting against the annoyances ; being caused by fish hawkers. It was j decided to reply that fish hawkers in j future will be compelled to comply with the by-laws. The Onehunga Cricket Club ha-- agreed I to the council's proposal for putting the j club's playing area in a better condition. The question of installing slot tele- J phones at Te Papapa, and near the beach j in Church Street West, is being considered by the telegraph engineer. Fur- , ther inquiries are being conducted by tin i Chief Postmaster to place posting boxes in Quadrant Road and the corner ci Athens and Mays Roads. The Public Works Department for- ! warded a copy of the proposed motor f vehicle regulations, with a request f*>r j constructive criticism. The letter urged j that uniformity throughout New Zealand city and borough motor traffic by-laws should be aimed at. The Mayor was of opinion that the chief motive of the Bill was to restrict the speed of motors t a degree that rendered competition with the railways harmless. The council refused permission for a j street collection to be taken up in One- j hunga in aid of the Freeman's Bay Com- : munity Club. s A sum of £IOO is required by the Auckland Harbour Board toward the cost of extending the wharf at Cornwallis. The , amount has been guaranteed by the Mayor, and a subscription list is to be posted in the council offices. The district fund account is in credit £2.895; waterworks loan. £500: unemployment loan, £32; destructor loan, £2,287; drainage advance; loan, .S3 #2. Accounts for £1,150 were passed for payment. - The Auckland Civic League submitted an elaborate proposal for settling unemployed men on the land. The Mayor contended that it was a question for the general government to deal with. Local bodies should not dabble with such schemes. . _ r . In connection with a charge Oi ~--l imposed on the borough as its share < f the costs of the recent Water Commission, it was resolved to pay up, but to forward the following remit to the next municipal conference: "That no local bodv be joined as a party to any commission unless its consent has been first obtained.” It was decided to support a propos for the introduction of a Bill for comI nuteorr iregnrance against m*to' ; v - j dents, and Mr. W.
