OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL

ROADS AND BRIDGES At the last meeting of the Ohura County Council it was resolved to inform the district engineer that the council was prepared to contribute £125 toward the cost of bridging the Ohura River on the Kaikara Road, in the Tatu Riding. The chairman, Mr. W. S. Currie, and the treasurer, Mr. J. F. McClenaghan, were given authority to sign debentures amounting to £5,000, on behalf of the council, and to affix the county seal thereto. Mr. A. F. McKenzie, of Tokirima Road, was granted permission to alter his road fence boundary to a line to be approved by the engineer. Inquiries are to be made as to what proportion of the cost the Ohura Town Board would contribute toward the construction of two bridges on the main road, Ohura Township. The engineer, Mr. H. Seerup, was instructed to make inquiries regarding the Taumarunui County Council’s tractor-grader, with a view to hiring it if considered advisable. Mr. J. F. McGovern, Tuhua, was given permission to graze stock on the reserve opposite the Tuhua School at a rental of 20s per annum, conditional on his keeping the land free from noxious weeds. Messrs. Levien and Son and Messrs. Broadbelt and Co., two sawmilling firms operating in the Ongarue district, sought permission to cart tjmber on the county roads. After lengthy discussion in which past trouble due to agreements being broken by millers was emphasised it was decided on the motion of Crs. Caird and Sandison, that all persons desirous of doing so be allowed to cart timber on the county roads provided that all back royalties owing be paid, and that agreement drawn up by the council be signed. Messrs. Broadbelt and Company's representative stated he would inform the council later whether the company would agree to comply with the conditions imposed. A report was submitted by the county ranger, in which he stated that, he had ranged all the principal roads, and found stock at large on most of them. Noxious weeds were flourishing throughout the county, and immediate attention would have to be given to coping with them if anything was to be done this season.
