LEPER SETTLEMENT’S CHRISTMAS APPEAL
NEEDS OF PATIENTS CLOTHING AND TOOLS Aucklanders who have called to mind the Christmas season and all it means should spare a thought for the leper settlement at Makogai Island, which is now making its annual appeal. A supply of light materials for making into clothing suitable for the tropical climate is greatly needed. The women patients spend a .urge part of their time at needlework and sewing, and they can find a use for even the smallest pieces of material. The men and boys pass the time in carpentry and cabinet-making, and a gift of any kind of tool is verj' acceptable. Apart from a few patients, books do not interest, as most of the others can neither read nor write. Cricket and tennis are played on the island, and the children also appreciate the gifts of games. The men welcome an}' quantity of tobacco. The Christmas cargo for Makogai this year 'wall leave by the Tofua on December 4. Parcels should be sent before this date to Mr. D. L. Thomas, Domain Street, Mount Albert, who will forward them to Makogai,
