NEW REGENT
“FAUST 77 Canuiia Horn, a newcomer to the screen, who was discovered in a cabaret in Berlin by F. W. Murnau, director of “The Last Laugh,’* was entrusted with the part of Marguerite in “Faust,” which is now playing at the New Regent Theatre. Murnau was casting about for a Marguerite at the U.F.A. studios in Berlin. It proved a difficult task. “Marguerite is known to everybody to have been chaste as the driven snow,” he said, “so it was difficult to engage an actress who was too well known. So many of them are married, which of course excluded them from the role. So I had to find a girl, pretty, winsome and a good actress, whom the breath of public opinion had not yet touched. “I found this fragile creature in Miss Horn. She is just 17 years old and had never before been screened. Tests soon showed that she was ideal for the part. She has a good deal of the naive qualities of Lillian Gish, ethereal, charming, dove-like. I am lucky to have found her. In “Faust,” which Cinema Art Films, Ltd., is releasing, Miss Horn has every opportunity to live the part of a wholesome girl whose only sin is that she loved unwisely. And yet by that love she was able to save the soul of a mail. Emil Jannings, who portrays the role of Mephisto, declared that never before had he appeared on the screen with an actress so in sympathy with her part. “It was a delight, to work with her,” he said, “she was so quick to rasp every nuance of the role. And offstage she was as delightful with her eager questions and her keen desire to learn. I predict a great future for her.”
