Nine million inhabitants of the Shantung Province are starving through drought, visitations of locusts, civil war and banditry, according to the reports of the International Famine Relief Committee. The crops average 10 per cent, of their usual output. Fifty thousand Nankingites are congregated at Hankow. The firing ou shipping has ceased. The Chinese authorities expressed a desire to co-operate with the foreigners. Hostilities appear to be ended on the Yangtsze, but on the northwestern fighting continues fiercely b tween the Northerners and the Nationalists. —A. and N.Z.
