Takapuna Jockey Club’s Fixture

FIRST DAY’S FIELDS TEN RACES PROBABLE SPLENDID ACCEPTANCES The spring meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club is to be held on Saturday and Monday, November 26 and 28. Acceptances for the first day’s racing were received up .to yesterday afternoon, and the club’s new secretary, Mr. F. L. McVay, was kept busy throughout. In the majority of events the fields are a bit «n the big side, and with clas§ well represented the racing across the harbour should be in keeping with the occasion.

One of the most interesting events carded for the first day is the “hack classic,” the Takapuna Plate. At present the number of horses remaining (31) is well in excess of the safety number (22), but it is to be hoped that in such an important contest a division will be found unnecessary. On the other hand, so many have paid up for the opening event, for maiden performers, that a division is essential. So that there is the possibility of ten races at Takapuna to-morrow week. The first day’s acceptances are as follow*:

MELROSE MAIDEN STAKES Of £250;, 7 furlongs

Big Win Recalled In referring to the stated intention of the New Zealander, George Young, to retire from the saddle at the end of the present season, the following appeared in a recent issue of the Sydney “Morning Herald”:—“So far as one can gather Young is fairly comfortable. Being one of the thrifty type, he has taken full advantage of the success that has come his way. Gloaming was a source of wealth to him, but It is probable he reaped more out of his winning mounts in Melbourne than elsewhere. Pilliewinkie’s Australian Cup must have swelled Young’s banking account considerably. The owners of Heroic and Pilliewinkie brought off a great coup with these horses —probably the greatest in the history of the Australian turf. What was the amount actually won has never been disclosed, but it is believed to have been in the region of £IOO,OOO. Young and Hugh Cairns, the latter of whom rode Heroic, will have the most pleasant recollections of that event. ’
