LATE MR. W. H. BAILEY

The first white child to be born in llowick, Mr. William Howick Bailey, died on Wednesday at the age of 80. He was also the first white child to be christened in the old church of All Saints’, the ceremony taking place soon after the building was erected by Bishop Selwyn. Arriving by the sailing ship Minerva in 1847, his parents were among the first to settle in Howick. The greater part of Mr. Bailey’s life was spent in Gisborne, but he returned to the Howick district and for about 15 years lived at Mellon’s Bay, later moving to Penrose. Mr. Bailey’s wife predeceased him 12 years ago. A sister, Mrs. Robert Massey, aged 85, is a resident of Pakuranga. The funeral took place at the All Saints’ Cemetery, Howick, yesterday.
