ROEZ SPRINGS A SURPRISE OTAHUHU Trotting’ Club’s spring fixture opened at Alexandra Park to-day in fine but chilly weather before a fair attendance. Despite the heavy rain which fell in the early morning the track is in good order. Results:

With Ridiculous Ease Fourteen started in the opening event, the Introductory Trot, Bright Light £B7O, Peter Tracey £730, Gold Star £4OB and Royal Bob £352, being the order of the betting. The favourite did not go off at all well, but there were several others mixing it, and they did it right through the race. Roez went off smartly, leading out of the straight from Royal Bob, Colonel Thorpe, Delbalzac, Peter Tracey and Bright Light. Roez opened up a gap along the back, and passing the post the second time she was 20 lengths clear of Colonel Thorpe and Peter Tracey, with Real Todd, Chessey, Anseline, Bright Light, Royal Bob, Roma Bingen and Gold Star following. Crossing the top and into the straight the last time Roez had retained her advantage, Anseline, Bright Light, Peter Tracey and Real Todd being next in order. Roez came on to win by 18 lengths from Anseline, who was eight lengths in front of Bright Light. Peter Tracey was fourth, and Gold Star, Colonel Thorpe, Real Todd, Roma Bingen, Royal Bob and Delbalzac next at intervals. Both favourites broke badly in the last three furlongs, otherwise they might have disputed second money with Anseline. MANGERE HANDICAP Of £300; 11 miles. 11—PADLOCK (j. A. Padlock at a Price Backers were again off the mark in the second event,, the Mangere Handicap, in which the best backed were Jean McElwyn £1,281, Beatty £6BB, Typist £524 and Holiora £432. Red Star began best and led along the back from Dress Circle and Dillon Huon, this being the order past the stands, with Jean McElwyn, Golden Grattan, Bingen King and Plalgana. Along the back Padlock and the favourite improved their positions. In the straight Red Star was a length in front of Padlock, Jean McElwyn and Gold Circle, who were running in close order, following them being Dillon Huon and Golden Gratan. Once in line for the judge Padlock took charge and went on to win by a length and a-half from Red Star, with Dillon Huon a length away third. Concertina .finished well in fourth place, and next .to finish were Golden Gratan, Gold. Circle, Golden Park, Jean McElwyn, Bingen King and Halgana. The winner paid a big double-figure dividend.

One For Florent A fine finish was seen in the Onehunga Handicap, in which Uncle Bert £1,094, Gold Jacket £9OO and Amaris £B3l were best supported. Lady Dunmore was a bit slow off the mark, Hypo leading out and passed the stands first time from Wallroon, Rockburn, Woodvale, Amaris and Florent. Woodvale improved his position and in the next circuit was up with Wallroon, with Amaris* and Gold Jacket close up, and Florent, Rockburn and Hypo next in order. Along tli6 back the last time Woodvale drew clear, while Florent improved his. position. Woodvale was just ahead of Amaris and Florent into the straight, with Gold Jacket and Wallroon handy. The leader was beaten as soon as they straightened up, and in a great finish between Florent and Amaris the former won by a head. Gold Jacket was three parts of a length away, just in front of Woodvale. RockWirn was fifth, and Wallroon and Dick Dillon next. The new six-furlong trotting course at Claudelands was “tried out” on Thursday, when two exhibition lightharness heats were run in conjunction with 'the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show. The track was in good order and will prove a great asset to the progressive club. The racing proved interesting, and the finish of the pacers’ contest was a splendid one, the Cambridgeowned Dealer defeating the Taupiritrained Beauty ~ Spot by a narrow margin. Sean Truibhais, a well-known Auckand provincial square-gaited performer, who is trained by R. ELLERSLIE DOINGS PREPARING FOR TAKAPUNA TO-DAY’S TRIALS Occasional rain made training operations at Ellerslie this morning extremely unpleasant. The course proper, one trestle , out, was the- track most in use for fast work, while the No. 2 grass was also availed of by trainers. . COURSE PROPER Double Mint, Restaurant and a companion were associated over five furlongs. which were cut out in 1.7. Red Lion, Catonian, Nankin Blue and Sir Mond were timed to run half a mile in 51 1-5. Lady Robinson travelled seven furlongs in 1.35, while Frowning Beauty for a similar distance took 1.34. The latter cut out the first three furlongs in 38 4-5. Abbey Day and Rally were in company over six furlongs, which took 1.20 2-5. The first three were run in 39 3-5. Whaka King easily beat Speechless in a bout over six furlongs in 1.19. Judge's Box and Zane Grey moved freely over a few furlongs but were not timed. Daddy’s Girl, Golden Wedding and Ash Tray accounted for six furlongs in 1.20, with the two former in front at the end. The first two furlongs were run in 26. WAR OFFICER WELL The Takapuna Plate candidate War Officer was assisted by Sleepy Sol in a run over seven furlongs in 1.33. War Officer appeared to have a slight advantage at the finish, and was going well. Archeno was given a run over six furlongs, the last five taking 1.7 2-5. Spalmoor and Royal Ensign finished on terms over half a mile in 54. The Fox was not all out to register 1.25 for six furlongs. Lord Guy and Honeheke covered half a mile in 51 4-5, while Karamu accounted for a similar distance in 54. Master Doon and Royal Mint were associated over nine furlongs. The first two furlongs took 31, and they finished together in 2.5 1-5. Quinvardia and Kamehameha. in view of their engagements at Taka.puna were sent over a round in 2.4 3-5, with the former well in front at, the finish. Golden Krist had a slight advantage over Arch Queen at the end of a mile in 1.34 3-5. Automne and Nola Night were partnered over five furlongs, the last four taking 53 1-5. Mon Star and Presumption were in front of Principal, Sir Russell and Aggressive at the end of half a mile the last three furlongs being run in 41. NO. 2 GRASS Tidal.
