FREEDOM IN WRITING

ADDRESS TO PENWOMEN The League of Penwomen enjoyed an address given yesterday afternoon by Mr. L. P. Leary on “The Freedom of the Pen.” Mrs. M. Stuart Boyd presided over a good attendance. Mr. Leary, whose light touches were appreciated by those present, referred to the attainment of the present liberties in writing and thinking and compared present-day conditions with those which prevailed in other ages. The liberties had been gained only after considerable sacrifice. The invention of the printing press had been the principal factor in the removal of many of the restrictions, as it was impossible for the authorities to trace the source of all the printed matter which left the presses. Beginning with Greek and Roman times, Mr. Leary traced his subject through to the present day. Nowadays the restrictions consisted principally of the law of libel.
