He is at present in Australia, and is due back in New Zealand shortly. n- Tillyard. who has had a distin•ished scientific career, lias become well known in connection with 11« researches int o the control of notf wc eds by means of insects. 1-nder his direction very up-to-date ■sectaries at the Cawthron Institute hwe lately been erected, and it is noed to complete experiments in the 'ontrol of blackberry and other nox--o,lls weeds. The departure of Dr. Tillyard, who Will leave the Dominion early next v.ar although a great loss, will not nut an end to this important work. The council of scientific and indusrVial research is taking steps co see o,at it is carried on. Dr Tillyard was New Zealand Government representative to the Imnerial Conference of Entomology in and he lias to his credit many important publications, one of the itest being a very valuable and comnrehensive treatise on the insects of Australia and New Zealand. His original research papers on entomological subjects number well aver a hundred. The new insectary and biological laboratory- at the Cawthron Institute, Assigned to deal with extended researches into noxious weeds parasites, no w been completed. The Dominion now has a first-class entomological research station, which compares more than favourably with similar research stations established elsewhere * t t, e Empire. The official opening of ,he insectary and laboratory at the Cawthron Institute will take place on December 13 on the occasion of the visit to Nelson of the Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr. L. S. Amery.
