MEAL ALLOWANCES
SHOP ASSISTANTS’ HOURS RIGHT TO PAYMENT RESTORED (THE SU'N’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Provision for the payment of meal allowances to shop assistants has been restored by the Legislative Council to the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, which was finally passed by the House of Representatives to-day, the Council’s amendments being agreed to on the motion of the Minister of Labour, the Hon. G. J. Anderson. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. H. E. Holland, expressed gratification at the Council’s action in restoring this provision, which he said should have been done before the Bill passed the House. Mr. Anderson: I have enough haloes already. Mr. Holland: They are certainly not brilliant ones. I am afraid there is sulphur in their composition. Mr. J. S. Dickson, Parnell, was afraid that employers would be able to keep girls in confectioners’ shops working until 9.30 p.m. selling confectionery, and then change them over to serving meals until 10.30, but the Minister said that the practice of the last four years would not be altered, and there would be no hardship as had been suggested.
