CHURCH MEMBERSHIP INCREASES BY 2,000

PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY Pre«« Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. At the annual session of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, the report stated: ‘ The total membership has reached 50,798. the net grain for the year being I, a 3.9 per cent, addition to last year’s roll.” The Church has clearly won back to ita normal rate of pre-war increase. Tbfi report of the finance committee stated that the treasurer, the Rev. W. J. Comrie, had notified his intention of asking the Assembly to relieve him of his duties as general treasurer at the end of 1928. In view of this statement and of other changes known to be pending, the committee recommended the Assembly to set up a representative committee to consider the whole question of the committee and officers of the Assembly. The debate was adjourned. TRIBUTE TO RETIRING MASTER The Assembly paid tribute to the work of the Rev. Professor W. Hewitson. of Knox College. Dunedin, who is now retiring after 19 years' service. The report stated that he had been a •powerful influence on the lives and characters of young men who were, and would be, among the leaders of the Dominion.
