One Divorce Every Five Minutes
SUPREME COURT SPEED FORTY-SIX PETITIONS DEALT WITH Four Hours were occupied in the Supreme Court yesterday in disposing of 46 undefended divorce petitions, at the rate of one about every five minutes. The list that confronted Mr. Justice Herdman totalled 66, but several cases did not come on. The women petitioners in two cases fainted in the witness box after giving evidence, but quickly recovered on being removed from the court. One woman gave evidence for two petitioners, an unusual proceeding. The concluding petitions were completed at 3.30 p.m. DESERTION AND SEPARATION Separation was the ground upon which Maria Hutchison (Mr. Beattie) was granted a decree nisi against Thomas Martin Hutchison. Fossey Harry Tackaberry (Mr. Beattie) was granted a decree nisi from Phyllis TAikaberry on the grounds of separation. Kathleen Frances E. Mowbray (Mr. Gould) married Douglas R. C. Mowbray in 1913. Last January he left her and had not returned. A decree nisi was granted. A decree nisi was granted Eva Jane Mansill (Mr. Thorne), on the ground of separation from John Henry Victor Mansill. . They could not get on after the wedding and agreed to live apart. Matilda Marshall (Mr. Singer) married Albert Ernest Marshall in 1900. They lived together until 1917 when the respondent's lazy habits became unbearable. He left her that year and she had never seen him again. A decree nisi was granted. Separation was the ground upon which Elizabeth Rae (Mr. Wilson) was granted a decree nisi against Arthur Onslow Rae. RESTITUTION OF RIGHTS Anna Arnolda Bjorvik was ordered to return to Jens Elias Bjorvik within 21 days. Lillian Colson (Mr. Leary) succeeded in her petition against Ernest Colson for restitution of conjugal rights. The respondent was ordered to return within 14 days.
